Nigeria Gets Three More Federal Varsities

10 Jan

The Federal Government, in its first Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in 2013 on Wednesday approved the establishment of three additional federal universities.  The three new Universities are:

Federal University of Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State

Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State

Federal University of Gashua, Yobe State

While briefing the public on the outcome of the meeting, the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku and his counterparts, Mr. Edem Duke (Tourism and Culture), Prof. Ruqqayatu Rufai (Education), and Dr. Yerima Ngama (State, Finance), stated that the establishment became necessary due to the upsurge in the number of youth yearning for university education.

The Minister of Education, Prof. (Mrs) Ruqqayatu Rufai, stated that the Universities will take off during the 2014/2015 academic year.

With this new development, every state in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, can now boast of at least one federal university.

What remains to be seen, however, is the buoyancy of these universities in terms of research and infrastructure.  As at now, most of the federal universities on ground lack basic needs for effectiveness.
